Tesla Addresses FSD Safety Issue with Audio Detection for Emergency Vehicles
Tesla Inc. has been flagged by investor Ross Gerber regarding a significant safety concern related to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. Gerber, who is also the CEO of Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management, highlighted the need for improvements in detecting emergency vehicles.
Current Developments: In a recent statement on social media, Gerber acknowledged that while FSD version 13.2.2 shows notable progress compared to previous versions, it still lacks the full autonomy that is expected. He revealed that Tesla is enhancing the FSD system to include audio detection for identifying nearby emergency vehicles. This advancement aims to overcome the current limitations that primarily depend on visual inputs.
Gerber pointed out, "Tesla is now working on adding hearing so it can know when an emergency vehicle is around. Yes, humans use more than one sense to drive." This remark underscores the necessity of multi-sensory functionality in autonomous driving technology.
The introduction of FSD version 13.2.2 marks a significant improvement over its predecessor, yet it still does not meet the full Level 5 autonomy standard. Gerber stressed that addressing this critical safety issue is essential for Tesla.
In December, Tesla began the rollout of FSD version 13, with company CEO Elon Musk claiming that it would greatly enhance the ability of drivers to navigate autonomously. According to Musk, the new version would allow drivers to travel up to five to ten times more miles without needing any intervention.
Regarding the FSD system's performance in its latest vehicle, the Cybertruck, Gerber noted that it seems to lag behind other Tesla models. However, he praised Tesla's overall software, describing it as significantly superior to that of other manufacturers, including Rivian Automotive Inc., which is also making strides in improving its offerings.
In addition to its work on FSD, Tesla is enhancing the infotainment system and has begun offering a free trial of SiriusXM services, which Gerber has welcomed in his Cybertruck. He continues to express optimism about Tesla's software capabilities, stating, "Tesla software is amazingly better than any vehicle. Although Rivian is improving nicely as well."
Market Context: These discussions arise amidst strong market performance for Tesla, with its stock recently overcoming the symbolic $420 mark. Analysts at Morgan Stanley have selected Tesla as their top stock pick for 2025, citing the company's advancements in autonomy and robotics.
Looking ahead, Tesla plans to launch a ride-hailing service in Texas and California next year, depending on regulatory approval. Initial operations may require human drivers to comply with state regulations.
Stock Performance: As of the latest closing session, Tesla's stock stood at $462.25, marking a daily increase of 7.35%. In after-hours trading, the stock rose an additional 0.64%. Year-to-date, Tesla's stock has experienced a remarkable increase of 86.08%., according to recent market data.
