Trump Again Calls for EU to Buy More US Energy to Avoid Tariffs

Published January 21, 2025

The US President, Donald Trump, has once more urged the European Union to increase its purchases of American oil and gas. He emphasized that by doing so, the EU could potentially steer clear of any tariffs that might be imposed.

Trump's Statements

During a recent press meeting at the White House, Trump stated, "The one thing they can do quickly is buy our oil and gas." He indicated that negotiations over tariffs could be linked to the EU's energy purchases from the United States. He further explained that while tariffs might be a forthcoming strategy, the fundamental solution is increasing Cthe EU's demand for US energy.

Energy Supply and Demand

Not only the European Union but also several Asian countries are evaluating the option of sourcing more energy from the US, which stands as the world's largest oil producer and exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG). European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had previously suggested that US imports could substitute for the LNG the EU has historically acquired from Russia.

Challenges in Energy Export

Despite the call for increased energy purchases, analysts note that the US might not have significant additional capacity to ramp up its LNG exports in the short run. The nature of LNG contracts usually means that to reroute supplies to Europe, agreements from original buyers would be needed, which would not increase the overall amount exported by the US immediately. Instead, European customers may want to secure their supply through long-term contracts with US LNG projects.

Trump's Policy Moves

In his sweeping strategy to boost American energy production, Trump has taken several measures. These include lifting restrictions on offshore oil and gas drilling and removing barriers that had been in place during previous administrations. He has also reinstated approvals for new LNG export facilities, claiming, "We are going to make a lot of money from energy. We have more than anyone else."

By advocating for increased energy transactions with the EU, Trump aims to foster stronger economic ties while solidifying the US's position as a global energy leader.
