Amazon Stock Could Approach $3 Trillion Next Year, Says Analyst

Published December 2, 2024

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) currently ranks as the fourth-largest company in the stock market based on market capitalization. However, it lags significantly behind the top three companies: Apple, Nvidia, and Microsoft, all of which have recently traded above the $3 trillion mark. In comparison, Amazon's market cap hovers around $2 trillion, illustrating a considerable gap.

Yet, there are indications that this could change in the near future. Amazon has strong potential in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), and its stock has increased by 35% this year, outperforming its larger competitors, with the exception of Nvidia. Wall Street shows a general consensus that Amazon stock is a good investment, with one analyst projecting its price could reach $285 within the next year. This forecast represents a 39% increase from its current valuation, potentially elevating Amazon's market cap to nearly $3 trillion.

Innovation in AI and E-Commerce Growth

Amazon started as a bookselling platform but has evolved into a massive e-commerce entity, dominating the U.S. market with nearly 40% of total online sales. This growth trajectory supports confidence in its future prospects. As e-commerce continues to expand as a portion of total retail sales, Amazon is capitalizing on that growth. The company boasts an impressive logistics network that allows it to enhance its operational efficiency, creating a self-reinforcing cycle of advantage over competitors.

In recent years, Amazon has revamped its distribution networks significantly, focusing on improving outbound logistics. Currently, the company is enhancing its inbound processes, leading to notable productivity gains. Its latest processing plant employs advanced robotics technology, boosting processing times by 25%, which is also expected to yield similar cost savings.

Beyond e-commerce, Amazon is making strides in generative AI solutions. The firm has been utilizing AI and machine learning across its operations for years, enhancing customer experiences through features like personalized product recommendations and efficient delivery services. Most recently, its generative AI is being marketed to clients of Amazon Web Services (AWS)—offering invaluable tools for businesses ranging from those building custom models to companies looking to harness Amazon's AI for their marketing needs.

Amazon’s advertising segment also demonstrates robust growth, with a year-over-year sales increase of 19% in the last quarter. As advertisers regain confidence and reinstate their budgets post-inflation cuts, Amazon is tapping into new avenues, such as video advertising on its ad-supported streaming platform. Progress in areas like streaming services and pharmacy is also noteworthy for the company’s diversification.

Is a $3 Trillion Market Cap Achievable for Amazon?

Currently, Amazon trades at a price-to-sales ratio of 3.5 and a price-to-earnings ratio of 44, with trailing sales of $620 billion and net income of $50 billion over the past twelve months. To hit a market cap of $3 trillion, it would need to achieve $850 billion in sales and $68 billion in net income.

Achieving $850 billion in sales within the next year appears ambitious, as it would require a sales increase of 37%. Recent growth rates have been around 11%, and while such performance was seen during peak pandemic times, it seems less likely moving forward. However, a higher price-to-sales ratio could still enable Amazon to reach the $3 trillion milestone.

Regarding net income, a 36% increase seems more achievable, especially as Amazon’s profit margins have shown volatility due to varying tax implications. Furthermore, Amazon’s current price-to-earnings ratio is below historical norms, suggesting there may be some room for growth without encountering severe valuation concerns.

While reaching a $3 trillion valuation within the next 12 to 18 months remains uncertain, investors can be optimistic about Amazon's potential for growth in the coming years, whether or not it achieves that specific market cap.
