FPIs Remain Net Sellers, Offload Stocks Worth Rs 2,575 Crore

The recent market trends have shown that foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) continue to remain net sellers in the stock market. On January 6, 2025, FPIs sold stocks worth approximately Rs 2,575.1 crore, marking the second consecutive session of selling according to provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.

Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) displayed a contrasting behavior, remaining net buyers for an impressive 14 consecutive sessions. During this time, they accumulated stocks worth Rs 5,749.7 crore, reflecting their continued confidence in the market.

January Investments and Trends

As of now, FPIs have sold shares totaling Rs 7,160 crore in January alone, as noted by the National Securities Depository Ltd. Additionally, throughout the entirety of 2024, foreign investors have been net sellers, offloading stocks worth Rs 7,078.3 crore, based on data compiled from NSDL by various reporting entities. In contrast, DIIs have remained net buyers during this period, purchasing stocks worth Rs 8,282.8 crore.

Interestingly, despite the selling trends observed for FPIs, data up to the previous trading day suggest that foreign institutions have, at least temporarily, managed to be net buyers, acquiring Rs 2,874.4 crore worth of Indian equities thus far in 2024.

Market Indices Experience Significant Decline

The benchmark indices on January 6, 2025, recorded the most substantial decline since October 3, 2024, closing lower for the second consecutive session. The NSE Nifty 50 index fell by 388.70 points, a decline of 1.62%, settling at 23,616.05 points. Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex experienced a drop of 1,258.12 points, or 1.59%, to close at 77,964.99 points—the lowest levels seen since November 21 of the previous year.

During the trading session, the Nifty index briefly dipped as much as 1.89%, reaching 23,551.90 points, while the Sensex fell by 1.82%, touching 77,781.62 points.

On the same day, the Indian rupee showed weakness against the US dollar, which could be a factor influencing market sentiments and investment decisions.
