As of January 2, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have been actively participating in the Indian stock market, with notable trends in their trading activities. On this day, FIIs sold index futures valued at Rs 767 crore and stock futures worth Rs 758.9 crore. Conversely, they made significant purchases in index options, amounting to Rs 12,311 crore, and in stock options, which reached Rs 22.38 crore.

FIIs In Cash Market

Foreign portfolio investors have shown a consistent pattern, remaining net sellers for the twelfth consecutive session. In contrast, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) maintained their buying streak for the eleventh session. According to preliminary data from the National Stock Exchange, FIIs sold stocks totaling Rs 1,782.7 crore, while DIIs bought stocks worth about Rs 1,690.4 crore.

Over the course of 2024, overseas investors collectively offloaded stocks valued at Rs 7,292.3 crore. Meanwhile, the DIIs stayed net buyers, acquiring stocks worth Rs 5.32 lakh crore. Despite a challenging year, data from the National Securities Depository Ltd. indicated that foreign institutions have been net buyers of Indian equities worth Rs 427 crore in early 2024.

FIIs In Futures And Options

Leading up to the January 25 expiry, the open interest, or the value of outstanding positions in the derivatives segment, witnessed an increase among FIIs in Nifty futures. The long-to-short ratio for FIIs in index futures is currently at 14% long positions to 86% short positions.

FII Contract Value

The overall Nifty 50 futures open interest in the market saw a rise of Rs 73 crore, moving from Rs 31,640 crore to Rs 31,713 crore as the January expiry approached.

F&O Cues

The Nifty January futures experienced a 0.42% increase, reaching 23,907, with a premium of 165 points. The open interest, however, has slightly declined by 0.16%. The distribution for the Nifty 50 Jan. 2 expiry series showcased considerable activity at 24,500 call strikes, while the 23,000 put strikes displayed maximum open interest.

Long-Short Ratio

The long-short ratio for foreign investors saw a minor decrease, falling to 1.45 from 1.47 in the previous session. Market sentiments for the new year indicated a positive start, with the Sensex gaining over 350 points, while Nifty settled around 23,750.
