AMD’s Desktop CPU Market Share Surges by Nearly 10%
AMD has experienced a significant increase in its desktop CPU market share, rising nearly 10% over the past year. This surge is largely attributed to the successful launch of its latest desktop gaming CPUs.
According to an analyst report from Mercury Research, which monitors market shares of CPUs from companies like AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm, the gains are evident across various segments of the CPU market. The report, partially provided by AMD to journalists, has been confirmed by Mercury Research.
Typically, as AMD gains market share, it reflects a corresponding decrease in Intel's share, given the low representation of Qualcomm's Snapdragon X CPUs in the desktop market.
In terms of numbers, AMD's desktop market share, measured in units, has climbed by 9.6 percentage points over the last year, reaching 28.7%. In the mobile CPU segment, AMD now commands 22.3% of the market, marking an increase of 2.8 percentage points. Intel generally maintains a dominant position, holding approximately 80% of the market while AMD shares the remaining portion.
Specifically in the desktop sector, AMD's momentum appears to be fueled by its Ryzen 7000X, 8000G, and 9000X series chips, despite some mixed reviews for the 9000X series and the impacts of performance-altering Windows updates post-launch. Mercury Research's figures represent sales over the last year, but the outlook is optimistic as AMD has just introduced its Ryzen 9000X3D chips. Early reviews suggest that these new chips outperform Intel's top offerings.
On the other hand, Intel is facing challenges, including substantial layoffs and considerable losses in its recent earnings report. Analysts have raised concerns regarding Intel's foundry strategy, especially amid complaints about not receiving promised funding from the CHIPS Act for the establishment of new manufacturing facilities in the United States.
Mercury's report has also noted that AMD claims a server revenue share of 33.9%, marking a new high point. However, this report excludes semi-custom chips that AMD provides for gaming consoles and those designed for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
