Ontario Launches New Volunteer Emergency Response Team

Published December 13, 2024

In an effort to enhance emergency response capabilities, Ontario is forming a new group of volunteers and skilled professionals to address natural disasters and emergencies across the province. Premier Doug Ford made this announcement at a news conference on Friday.

Introducing Ontario Corps

The newly established Ontario Corps is designed to provide immediate assistance during emergencies. This volunteer-staffed team will offer critical services such as emergency shelter, debris management, and flood protection, as indicated in a recent provincial news release.

According to Premier Ford, this initiative marks a significant advance in how emergency management will be handled in Ontario. "It's going to be a game changer for emergency management in Ontario," he stated during the announcement.

Collaboration with Partner Organizations

Ontario Corps will work closely with various organizations, including non-governmental groups and First Nations partners, to coordinate effective emergency responses. Some of the partnering organizations include Feed Ontario, the Salvation Army, and Ontario Search.

The initiative was tested recently when a severe snowstorm hit Gravenhurst in Muskoka. During this situation, Ontario Corps members were deployed to conduct wellness checks for residents, distribute food hampers, and support a warming center in the town.

Individuals who wish to join Ontario Corps can register on the provincial government's website. To join, volunteers must be residents of Ontario and at least 16 years old. They will also need to complete a free criminal record check and undergo online training.

Investment in Emergency Preparedness

The provincial government has committed $110 million to enhance emergency preparedness and response initiatives, which includes the formation of Ontario Corps. Additionally, plans are underway to establish a new headquarters in Etobicoke that will serve as a center for coordinated emergency response efforts.
