Elon Musk Aims to Establish Starbase as a New Texas City

Published December 14, 2024

SpaceX is embarking on an ambitious plan: the conversion of its Starbase site into an independent city in Texas. Located at the southern tip of the state in Boca Chica Beach, near the Mexican border, this area has become synonymous with SpaceX's operations and the development of its Starship rockets.

On a recent Thursday, Elon Musk's company submitted a formal request to local officials to hold an election regarding the incorporation of Starbase as a city. This initiative follows a petition submitted by the residents of the surrounding area, highlighting the community's desire for a more formal structure to support mutual growth with SpaceX.

In a letter to Cameron County, Kathryn Lueders, the general manager of Starbase, stated, "To continue growing the workforce necessary to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the ability to grow Starbase as a community."

This is not the first time the idea of creating a city at the Starbase site has been discussed. Back in 2021, Musk hinted at such ambitions through a brief social media post that simply mentioned the potential creation of a city named Starbase, Texas.

Legal Process for Incorporation

Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr., the primary elected official of the county, remarked that while discussions had occurred previously, this marks the first instance where an official petition has been filed for the incorporation of Starbase. The county’s legal and elections administration will review the petition to ensure it meets all legal requirements.

Impact on the Community

Currently, more than 3,400 employees and contractors work at the Starbase site, according to a local impact study. SpaceX's rapid expansion in the area has drawn some local opposition. In July, a group known as Save RGV filed a lawsuit against the company, claiming it had committed environmental violations, including the alleged dumping of polluted water into a nearby bay. In response, SpaceX asserted that a state review had found no environmental risks and deemed the lawsuit as "frivolous."

As the situation develops, the outcome of this incorporation request may have significant implications for both SpaceX and the local community. It reflects a growing ambition for SpaceX in Texas, particularly after Musk's announcement earlier this year about moving SpaceX and his social media company X from California to Texas.

This potential shift in governance underscores the increasing importance of the Starbase site in the broader SpaceX mission and raises questions about how such changes might affect the local environment and economy.
